On Monday we sailed to the island of Sifnos. It was the sail from
hell because we had high winds,
10 foot waves, and despite Dramamine or patches, almost everyone was on
the edge of throwing up
(except Clada, who napped during the 3 hours of wet, rolling
sailing). Only one person got sick, but
everyone was thinking of how to get to the next island without getting
back on the boat. We really
enjoyed Sifnos once the boat was in the harbor, and fortunately the
next day, the winds died down.
Sifnos had a beautiful beach for swimming. The water is colder
than the Caribbean, and there aren't many fish,
but it was still very nice, especially with all of the cafes located
right on the beach.
We docked overnight, within walking distance to a small
beachside village.
Feral cats park themselves all over the place on this island.
We took a local bus to the town of Apollonia and from there we took
taxies to reach our next stop.
The views from the medieval city of
Kastro were incredible. There were paths and steps that took us
around the entire village.
Several of our
friends walked down to the chapel while we watched from above and
shopped at a silversmith.
Everywhere we turned, we could see for miles. The arid climate
reminded us of Albuquerque.
We found the coolest cafe for drinks and appetizers. It was a
cozy place with great foliage.
The prickly pear
cactus was huge...a few of us managed to get stuck by it. Michele
and Dan enjoyed the stop here.
Jennifer, Clada & Chip squeezed
in for a self-portrait.
We had a funny
experience trying to take the bus in Apollonia back to the dock...how
were we supposed to know the
bus had to drive past us for another stop
before it turned around and let us back on. We were
language-challenged on that trip.
The views from Plays Yialos, where we docked, were serene...
Except when the ferries come in! We were on a busy dock,
especially when the water ferry came in at 3 am! This website is for the
