In the theme that "you get your way all day on your
birthday," Gary decided he wanted to
kayak for his 63rd birthday. We had never been
there before, so Gary & Cathy were our tour guides.
We drove 2 trucks and took the kayaks to Molasses Pier,
where a lot of local fishing boats launch.
Gary had a waterproof camera, so he took pictures of us
kayaking.
We made the trip across in about 20
minutes. We brought a small cooler of beer, which
tasted really, really good.
It is a neat little island. It was formed when the
port was dredged, so the island has a lot of coral and
shells on it.
Good water shoes are a must for walking
around the island. Chip had the best ones, and even
his feet were tender the next day.
This was an interesting wreck...there were even mangroves
growing inside of it.
Cathy was hot so she laid in the water to cool off some.
We had Quality Deli sub sandwiches for lunch (hmmmm
good...a fabulous Cubano) and fancy cheeto's ,
and then we got to watch hoards of hermit crabs with all
kinds of shells devour the bread crusts.
Gary got in the water, too, but perhaps not because he was
hot...
The water was really pretty.
We walked over a large part of the island.
Check out all of the
dead coral and shells...it isn't easy walking around Shell
Island.
We have learned the secret to digital
photography...stand in the back!
The trip back was uneventful except that Clada
broke her kayak rudder and had to steer with her
paddle...in a tough current!
Gary took some
panoramic shots with an IPhone App. Pretty cool.
We have lived here over 7 years and we're still seeing
new stuff, thanks to Gary & Cathy!
It was a fun birthday, especially with the HOMEMADE
FRIED CHICKEN! This
