We found time to visit the famous Poet Sandal-Maker of Athens, Stavros
Melissimos.
Chip has a terrible time finding sandals for his strange feet so
custom-made sandals were perfect. The first thing we had to do
is decide the style of sandal.
Eric had the best luck; there was a pair already made that fit
him perfectly.
We definitely
invaded the small shop with all six of us yet the Emmette brothers had
Stavros laughing. Chip asked the sandal-maker if he had
the ugliest feet that he'd ever seen, but Stavros wouldn't say.
Chip selected a style of sandal that could be easily adjusted to fit
his feet.
After the correct size soles are selected, the leather is attached on
one side. Then the sandals are placed back on
the feet and the other side of the sandal straps are adjusted.
Rod's feet were easy to fit, but
he entertained us with his dance on the cardboard foot stool.
Chip liked his first pair so much he
decided to buy another pair in a different style. Stavros had to
be creative in making the new
sandals, even cutting fresh leather. It was so complicated that
we had to return late that night for a final fitting. We even
named
the new model "The Chipper." Chip loves his new custom made
sandals!
Here is what our sandals look like
after we oiled them. This website is for the
