We have lived here almost four
years and experienced our first hurricane.
Hurricane Omar developed after first passing by St Croix as a tropical
storm.
The winds were between 100 and 127 mph
and did major damage to power poles and trees,
as well as sinking over 40 boats in the harbor.
With the
exception of a shredded tarp, this is the extent of damage on our
hill. The driveway was blocked.
Chip
learns to move the power cord BEFORE cutting the tree down (we plugged
into our neighbors generator to run the power saw).
It took us
about
30 minutes to clear it, with the help of ourneighbor's guest,
David.
Power poles were down all over the island, especially on
the east end. This power pole was at the Salt River.
We had no power for 3 days.
WAPA did a really good job restoring power to the island, although the
extensive damage left some without power for 3 weeks.
Chip hung up a temporary shower for us to use,
so we didn't suffer.
Trees were down all over the island--including 200-year old trees.
Omar was
originally forecasted to have 70-80 mph winds, but twelve hours before
it hit, the forecast changed and there wasn't enough
time to relocate the boats left in the harbor. The
pictures below were taken at Christiansted Harbor four days after the
hurricane.
The condo at Long
Reef had power first, so we showered there and cookeddinner.
Chip and I actually slept through the storm. We went to bed at
830 pm when the power went out, and slept until 730 the next
morning. Hurricane Omar was apparently raging from 12 pm until 2
am. We're
glad it was a fast-moving storm.
