Hurricane Earl was a Cat 2, whose
eye was 100 miles north of St Croix.
It
didn't cause too much damage on the island, but most of the island lost
electrical power
for three to five days.
Hurricane Earl winds came from the west so we kept our front door open
and peeked around the corner to test the winds.
Our telephone line was flopping around but Chip was able to get it
secured before the winds got too bad.
The winds were
whipping our small
palms.
The ocean was pretty wild during the storm
There was salt spray everywhere as the waves kicked up with the winds.
The waves were
really loud, too.
We planned to
replace our temporary power pole, and had braced it, but the wind came
from the west and knocked down our pole.
Fortunately we already had a new pole on hand, so our electrician
installed a new box, and WAPA moved the line over.
We didn't suffer much. We ran our fridge off of our neighbor's
huge generator,
and used our portable generator to run our water pump for showers and
cooking as needed.
We used the manual transfer switch we installed last year, so that was
money well spent.
WAPA worked hard and had power restored to our area in three days. This website is for the personal
